The Major Scale Pattern

Learn the whole-half step pattern of the major scale and see it on the fretboard.

Instructions

  1. Set Level 3 on Guitar. Switch to Scale mode (click "Scale" above the chord picker).
  2. Select the C Major scale. Every highlighted note belongs to the scale.
  3. The pattern is: Whole-Whole-Half-Whole-Whole-Whole-Half (2-2-1-2-2-1-1 frets).
  4. Notice the 7 colors: R (red), M2 (orange), M3 (yellow), P4 (green), P5 (blue), M6 (purple), M7 (pink).
  5. Try G Major — the same pattern, shifted to start on G.
TIP

Every major scale uses the same W-W-H-W-W-W-H formula. The only thing that changes is the starting note.
