Hear and see the difference between major (yellow) and minor (orange) thirds.
Start Lesson in ChordColor →Instructions
- Set Level 2 on Guitar. Select C Major.
- Look for the yellow dot — that's the Major 3rd (M3). It's 4 half steps above the root.
- Now switch to C Minor. The yellow becomes orange — that's the Minor 3rd (m3). It's 3 half steps above the root.
- Play each chord and listen. The major third sounds bright and happy; the minor third sounds dark and sad.
- This one interval — major vs minor third — is what makes a chord "major" or "minor."
TIP
Yellow (#FDD835) = Major 3rd. Orange (#FFB300) = Minor 3rd. This is the single most important interval to recognize.
